Erasing Debt

Erasing DebtWouldn’t it be nice to simply erase your debt?

I saw an ad this morning that said something to the effects of “Erase your debt, it’s fast, easy and we do all of the work for you!”

Folks, don’t listen to these ads. There is no magic debt eraser. When it comes to repaying your debt there are few legitimate options available in my opinion.

You can buckle down and stick to your own personal budget. You can try to work with your creditors directly. You can file bankruptcy in certain cases. You can do nothing. You can work with a non profit credit counseling organization like Debt Reduction Services. (I apologize for the blatant plug but I believe DRS offers an excellent product, not to mention the free consultations) but you simply can’t erase your debt.

No matter how hard you try it will keep showing up until it is dealt with properly.

On another note, in regards to this ad, I’m not sure of the company but I do want to point out that with the holiday season coming swiftly you may hear more ads like this that sound too good to be true.

Do your homework before talking to any company. Make sure you check in with the Better Business Bureau and do some online research first. The last thing you want to do is take an already tough situation and make it worse.

If you have any suggestions or stories on how you’ve experienced relief from credit cards and other debt feel free to share in the comment section below. Tips, tricks and other suggestions are always welcome!

I think that working with a non profit credit counseling company is a really good idea along with sitting down and creating a budget for yourself. I have a few friends that have done this and it has helped them tremendously. The non profit credit counseling company helped them make paying off their debt manageable, and the budget has kept them out of further debt.
