Lowering Your Home Heating Expenses
Reduce Your Home Heating Bill
For those of us that live in cooler climates here are a few ideas that might help you save on your monthly heating bill. You can shave quite a bit off of money off of your bill by doing a few or even all of these relatively easy to implement ideas.
- Lower the thermostat setting
If you currently run your thermostat at 72 degrees try lowering it to 69 degrees. Wear a sweater or an additional layer of clothing for extra comfort while you adapt to the cooler setting. By just making a slight change in the setting you can save several dollars per month on your bill.
- Lower the thermostat at night or when you are away
A common misconception about home heating is that it costs more to heat up a home to its regular temperature therefore it is important to keep the home at a regular base heating level rather than turn down the thermostat while away. The fact is that by setting the thermostat down 10 degrees while the home in empty and in the evening while everyone is sleeping can save you a great deal of money on your home heating bill, even with the need to ‘reheat’ the house regularly when you come home. For every $100.00 spent on heating you can possibly save $15.00 by following this single step.
- Check for drafty areas and repair
Bad weather stripping can let cold air in and increase your heating needs. If you find cracked or worn weather stripping make sure to replace it.
- Heating unoccupied rooms
Check the heater vents in rooms that you are not using. You may want to consider closing them and sealing the room off so more of the heat you are using is going to rooms that are occupied.
By following these tips you may save money but another benefit of paying close attention to your energy efficiency is that it can also lead to money savings efficiency in other aspects of your life.

The easiest way to make your home more energy efficient is to seal any air leaks, and one that is often overlooked is the bathroom ventilation fan and exhaust vent. The back-draft flap these units come with do a very poor job of stopping leaks. To address this issue, I use a replacement insert fan from the Larson Fan Company . Their fans has a true damper built in, that does a great job in keeping warm air in during the winter and hot, humid air out in the summer. This product has reduced my annual energy bills by over ten percent. It saves the most when air conditioning is being used.
Steve,
Thanks for sharing your pointer on home heating and cooling efficiency. I’ve added a link to the Larson Fan Companies website in your post so our readers can read more on the product you’ve had success with.
Sincerely,
